Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking Assistance Program

Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking Assistance Program

Project Full Name: Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking Assistance Program from Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women

Project Length: 2010-2012

We strived to help teens recognize healthy relationship behaviors vs. unhealthy behaviors. We believed preventative education in these matters not only guided teens in identifying potentially violent and unhealthy relationships, it also provided them with the skills, opportunities and information needed to create and sustain lifelong healthy relationships.

WFF (formerly WHMI Strong Families Strong Wyoming), in collaboration with the Wyoming Association of Teachers of Family and Consumer Science (WATFACS), the Wyoming Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (WCADVSA) and the United Nations Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY), was excited to be implementing a dating violence prevention education program in junior high and high schools across Laramie, Park and Fremont counties.

This project, funded by the United States Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women, aimed to enhance the lives of Wyoming teens by offering instruction in the areas of: the differences between attraction and infatuation, breaking up and dating abuse, principles of smart dating, foundations for good communication, communication challenges and conflict resolution, self esteem matters, and reporting incidents safely.

The Teen Relationship Workbook

A great tool for helping young people to develop healthy intimate relationships and prevent relationship/dating abuse; it will be paired with the “Red Flags: Avoiding Abusive Relationships” award-winning DVD that uses dramatic vignettes and a “Love Referee” to help teens recognize sexual pressure, manipulative and obsessive behavior, physical abuse, lying, and problem lifestyles.
